Today, October 21, it has been announced that the Russian team is to participate in A1, a new motor racing GRAND PRIX series. The first stage of the competition was held last September in Great Britain. Though the Russian team participated, it did not compete in the second stage held on October 9 in Germany.
Thanks to ITERA Oil and Gas Company, the new team owner, Russians will be able to participate in the third stage of the series, which is to be held next Sunday, on October 23, in Eshtorille (Portugal).
Two Russian pilots: Mikhail Alyoshin, Vice-champion of the Renault Formula, and Alexander Turumin, Formula-1600 Champion of Russia in 2003, have received the honor to defend the colors of the national flag.
According to Igor Makarov, Chairman of the Board of Directors of ITERA Oil and Gas Company, Russian team has a good prospect in the new formula.
“We have taken a deliberate decision to support the Russian A1 GRAND PRIX team. Assistance to national sports is among top social program priorities of ITERA Oil and Gas Company. Fruitfulness of ITERA efforts has been proven by numerous victories and medals won by athletes we support. Time has come for a new burst in, motor racing, perhaps, the most spectacular kind of sport. Russia is worth having its own team in this new World GRAND PRIX, and we are proud, that it is ITERA Oil and Gas Company that provided such an important feature for the image of the country. The best award for us will be our pilots’ victories and gratitude of the Russian fans; they have got their own team in the new formula of world motor racing”.
Currently, several scenarios of the Russian team participation in A1 GRAND PRIX are under discussion. In particular, the Moscow Mayor Yu.M.Luzhkov is interested in organizing a Russian stage of A1 GRAND PRIX in the capital, and he approved the project in principle. Besides, a project of Russian A1 championship is being considered, which will help to select the Russian athletes for the future A1 GRAND PRIX series.
