Legendary white cranes’ population being restored due to the efforts of volunteers

2006-04-05 Îïóáëèêîâàíî: REGIONS.RU

Presentation of international ecological project “The Flight of Hope”, financially supported by ITERA, took place in London. The presentation was organized within the exhibition “Natural resources and environment protection in Russia”.

Numerous visitors got acquainted to the documents on the history of the white crane, which is considered a sacred bird by native people of the Russian North. Also, the visitors could learn how the population of rare white cranes nesting in Yamal are preserved and reinstated due to the efforts of All-Russian Scientific and Research Institute for Environment Protection, the Oksk Biosphere State Natural Reserve and “The White Crane” -  Yamalo-Nenets Fund associates.

A 20-minute film “The legendary white crane” was a bright illustration of research materials on white crane life. The film was made in the field, and presented a unique material on the biology of rare bird listed in the Red Book.

Materials on white crane farming in the Oksk State Biospherical National Reserve impressed ornithologists. Here baby birds are prepared to fly to their nesting places in Yamal and to their long-distance migrations to winter sites.  Birds will find the right way thanks to special motor-gliders, constructed with ITERA support.
